The spokesperson for the PNV in Congress, Maribel Vaquero, demands an "exercise of democracy" and "defend democratic systems" against a Popular Party that, in wanting to "govern at all costs," "extends a hand to Vox and assumes part of its political ideology."
In an interview with the newspaper Berria, collected by Europa Press, Vaquero warns of the current "risk," perceiving that "the democratic systems we have known until now are being questioned" and that there is "a lack of social adhesion, not only to politicians and political parties but also to democratic systems and institutions."
"When they are questioned, the model of society we have is questioned," she emphasizes, attributing the consolidation of the far-right in Spain to the fact that "the PP has made agreements to be able to govern in some autonomous communities and also because a certain polarization is generated." In her opinion, "The PP provokes, the Socialist Party responds and others, and there is Vox, eating popcorn and applauding; doing nothing, and gaining votes. And I think we should not give it so much prominence."
Vaquero acknowledges that "through polarization and tension, the political forces that are at the extreme gain votes" and, for this reason, insists on the need for an "exercise of democracy."
She argues that "we have to argue our political positions, because the issue is neither black nor white. And, lately, politics has become TikTok," which is why she demands a social base formed by "a mature society, a society that believes in human rights, a people that guarantees social justice."
Questioned about whether there is a lack of capacity to respond to the rise of the far-right, she points out that, among the "many factors," is that the Popular Party "wants to govern at all costs, that is why it extends a hand to Vox and that is why it has to assume part of Vox's political ideology."
"And thus you normalize those political ideas because that is a national priority. You assimilate it among your voters and normalize it in society," she adds, appealing to citizen "responsibility." She warns that, "If not, we leave that path to the far-right and to those who are trying to polarize, and people should not be treated like children. We are a mature society and issues must be addressed, solutions must be provided. Starting from consensus, of course."
