The Ministry of Interior has appointed Chief Commissioner José Santafé Arnedo as the new Deputy Operational Director (DAO) of the National Police, replacing the previous uniformed head of the Corps after the crisis triggered by the complaint for alleged sexual assault that led to the resignation of José Ángel González on February 17.

According to Interior, Santafé Arnedo joined the National Police in 1990 and, since July 2022, held the position of superior chief of Police in the Balearic Islands.

The Deputy Operational Directorate had been provisionally assumed by Chief Commissioner Gemma Barroso, Deputy Director General of Human Resources and Training of the National Police. This official was the one who on Tuesday, February 17, became aware of the complaint and who, subsequently, contacted the complainant --a police inspector-- to assign her police protection.
