The political secretary and MEP of Podemos, Irene Montero, has questioned this Saturday the conversations of the central Executive with other parliamentary groups regarding the so-called 'Real Decreto Mari Carmen', warning that "the Government is negotiating with Junts" to impose "a trágala on all the people who are here today defending the right to housing".
"We think that the Government is negotiating with Junts to impose a trágala on all the people who are here today defending the right to housing and we are not going to accept it," Montero reiterated during the mobilization "Not one more Maricarmen", which has taken to the streets of Madrid this Saturday.
In her speech, the Podemos leader has demanded the expropriation of "650,000 homes in the hands of vulture funds" to incorporate them into the social rental stock, as well as a legal reduction of rental prices.
The protest, called by the Madrid Tenants' Union, began at 6:30 PM at Puerta del Sol, gathering thousands of people who demand accountability for the eviction of Maricarmen Abascal and call for urgent measures to guarantee the right to decent housing.
In this line, Montero emphasized that "the message today is very clear" and is that "the housing business has to end", calling for "the street has to keep overflowing" so that speculators and landlords "have nowhere to go".
Criticism of holding companies and the situation of the vulnerable
During her speech, the former minister has attacked the actions of companies like Urbagestión, pointing out that "it was leaking that it was on the verge of bankruptcy, that it had many problems with its mail, with the people who were questioning their decision".
She added that there are "few greater shames than, after evicting an 87-year-old woman from the house she has lived in for 70 years, they want to make us believe that they are the victims".
Montero has insisted on the need for institutions to intervene in the face of the pressure that people at risk of eviction are suffering, demanding measures to stop "the fear and shame that Maricarmen feels and so many 'Maricarmenes' who are at risk of eviction or who are at risk of not being able to pay even for food to pay the rent or to pay the mortgage".
Belarra asks the Government for "the best possible decree" on housing
For its part, the general secretary of Podemos, Ione Belarra, has pointed out that her party is going to "continue pressing for the Government to approve the best possible royal decree law" on housing, although she has warned that this problem "is not solved by any royal decree law" on its own if it is not accompanied by social mobilization.
In the midst of the march, Belarra has claimed that "houses must be for living," highlighting the presence of Podemos in this "historic mobilization because people have said enough."
"Enough of housing being a business. Not a house in the hands of vulture funds, nor a house for tourism while there are families who have nowhere to live," she emphasized, demanding that residential use stop being treated as a speculative market "once and for all."
