The national spokesperson of the BNG, Ana Pontón, has described as "moral and political indecency" Alberto Núñez Feijóo's request to the unions that they suspend the November 11 strike, criticizing the PP leader for resorting to the Urda tragedy and the memory of the accident and its victims to "attack the workers".
From an event held in Vigo, Pontón stressed that "it is very serious" for Feijóo to call into question "a fundamental right" such as the right to strike. As she pointed out, "this speaks very well of what Feijóo's democratic principles are, but questioning that strike by appealing to a tragedy that claimed the lives of 69 people is a moral and political indecency that makes very clear who he is, and portrays whoever does it".
The nationalist leader stressed that "in politics not everything goes" and reproached the PP and its president for using the Urda disaster "to attack the workers who have called a general strike to defend a dignified life". In her view, "it is a moral poverty that portrays a PP and a Feijóo who are increasingly more ultra and who show that they have no limits and are willing to do anything".
For Ana Pontón "it is curious" that the top PP official presents the call as a strike against the opposition, when it is, she insisted, a mobilization to "defend the right to housing". In her opinion, the position of the 'populars' shows that "they are going to keep defending the right to speculation".
In this line, she recalled Feijóo's time at the head of the Xunta and his decisions on housing, accusing him of having "blown up" social policies in this area, of having "paralyzed" the construction of public housing and of culminating with the "great achievement" of delivering only 15 social rental homes in his last 8 years as Galician president. "This is Feijóo's housing policy and it is an absolute disgrace", she concluded.
For all these reasons, Pontón encouraged participation in the protest day of November 11 "for the right to housing" and to prevent new cuts in rights and freedoms. She stressed that the BNG will do "everything possible" so that "the reaction does not reach the Government and to keep expanding rights and freedoms", something that, she recalled, is also "at stake on November 29".
