The Government of Spain has conveyed its condolences on the death of the emir emeritus of Qatar, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who passed away at the age of 74.
In an official note, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has highlighted the leadership role and political legacy of the sheikh, "architect of the modernization of the State of Qatar and who has always expressed his close and sincere friendship with Spain".
Likewise, the Executive has conveyed "its deepest sorrow" to the current emir of Qatar, Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, and his relatives, as well as to the authorities and the entire Qatari people.
The death of the former emir, at the age of 74, occurred this Sunday, as reported by the Amiri Diwan, the country's sovereign institution, in an official statement.
The sheikh is recognized, above all, for the profound energy transformation promoted during his 18 years at the head of the emirate, from when he deposed his father in a bloodless coup d'état in 1995 until he transferred power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in 2013. In that period, Qatar went from sending its first shipment of liquefied natural gas in 1996 to consolidating itself as the world's leading exporter of this resource.
