The spokesperson for the Tenants' Union of Madrid, Alicia del Río, assured this Saturday that the case of Maricarmen has represented a "point of no return" in the defense of the right to housing in Spain and has demanded that the Executive give the green light without further delay this Tuesday to the so-called 'Maricarmen royal decree'.
In this line, she warned in statements to the press, before the march "Not one more Maricarmen", that if the regulation is not approved, the Government "makes no sense" and should reconsider its continuity.
Del Río emphasized that what happened with this tenant "has shocked the whole country and has represented a turning point" from which the union is not willing to allow similar episodes to occur again.
"We no longer accept living under these rentier laws that put life below the profit of a few," stated the spokesperson, who has directed her reproaches at both the regional and state administrations.
First, she pointed to the regional Government led by Isabel Díaz Ayuso as responsible for having turned the Community of Madrid into a "paradise of speculation," criticizing the holding of "real estate fairs for speculators" and the use of public resources on "luxury penthouses."
At the same time, she accused the central Executive of lack of response and reproached it for having used "Maricarmen's pain in its partisan campaign against the PP."
"In this country, we are governed by vultures," Del Río emphasized, insisting that housing must be addressed as a basic right and not as a business, through "brave" regulation.
The keys to the 'Maricarmen royal decree'
To move towards a system that "eliminates speculation," the Tenants' Union has presented to the parliamentary groups the 'Maricarmen royal decree', whose provisions propose four main axes: the creation of indefinite contracts through automatic renewals, the freezing of rental prices, the end of "fraud" in seasonal and room contracts, and an effective moratorium that prevents evictions without housing alternatives.
"If our wages do not increase, we are not going to finance the rentiers either," the spokesperson emphasized, indicating that the regulatory proposal is already in the hands of the political forces represented in the Congress of Deputies.
Del Río has appealed to the entire citizenry to maintain pressure in the streets and to transform this case into "the beginning of the conquest of the right to housing."
