Marc Márquez leaves the Qatar GP with a second-place finish and the world title still pending. Marco Bezzecchi has won this Sunday’s race, 8 November, while Jorge Martín has finished seventh.

The combination prevents Márquez from celebrating the championship in Lusail. The Spaniard arrived at the race with his first mathematical chance to resolve it, after winning Saturday’s sprint and moving 49 points ahead of Martín. That previous difference was confirmed by MotoGP.

The Sunday result favors the Ducati rider again over his main rival, although not enough to leave the World Championship decided.

Why Márquez is not champion despite finishing ahead of Martín

The conditions to close the championship in Qatar were demanding. Márquez needed to win the race and for Martín to finish outside the points.

The Spaniard’s victory would have raised his tally from 411 to 436. If Martín had not scored, he would have remained on 362, with a difference of 74 points—an amount equal to what would be available after Qatar.

Neither of those two conditions has been met in the result reported by Marca. Márquez has been second and Martín has managed to score with his seventh-place finish.

Therefore, finishing ahead of his pursuer allows him to get closer to the goal, but it does not mean he has reached the necessary advantage to be crowned champion.

How the standings stand between Márquez and Jorge Martín

Before Sunday’s race, Márquez had 411 points and Martín 362.

Applying the ordinary race scoring system to the result reported—20 points for second place and nine for seventh—Márquez would move to 431 and Martín to 371. The distance between them would be 60 points.

It is a calculation based on the announced positions, pending confirmation against the final official standings. It assumes that Márquez would have gained another eleven points of margin over Martín during the long race.

With 74 points still at stake, that difference would keep the possibility of a mathematical comeback open. The title would still not be decided, although Márquez would have a greater advantage than at the start of the weekend.

Bezzecchi wins after Saturday’s incident

The announced victory for Bezzecchi comes after a previous day very different from this one. In Saturday’s sprint race, the Italian went down after a contact with Márquez while both were fighting for the early positions.

Márquez ended up winning that race, with Fabio Di Giannantonio second and Martín third. The result allowed the Ducati rider to enter Sunday with options to be crowned champion.

On Sunday the winner changes, but the central issue of the championship remains: Márquez continues ahead of Martín and needs another appointment to finish the job.
