Cantabria launches this Sunday, November 1, the new eel-fishing season together with the Experimental Sea Urchin Exploitation Plan, which regulates the capture of both species in the waters of the autonomous community.
The eel season will be carried out between November 1, 2026 and February 28, 2027, and in addition a closed season is set from April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027, which coincides with the migration phase of this species.
Nevertheless, European regulations contemplate an exception of thirty non-consecutive days of fishing during the main migration period, between November 1 and March 31, 2027.
In application of this regulation, the thirty authorized working days for the season are set from November 5 to 13 and from December 5 to 13, 2026, as well as from January 4 to 11 and from February 3 to 10, 2027.
The resolution also provides for the option of exceptionally varying these fishing days when circumstances arise that prevent the ordinary development of the activity, such as episodes of adverse weather, river floods or other incidents. In such cases, the representative organizations of the sector may request the Fishing Activities Service to modify the authorized days with a minimum prior notice of 48 hours.
It is also determined that the weighing of daily catches may be carried out at any of the fish markets of Cantabria, as well as at the fish market of Bustio, in Asturias.
Those interested in participating in the campaign must register their applications within a period of ten working days starting from the day after the publication of the resolution.
As for the Experimental Sea Urchin Exploitation Plan in Cantabria, the period enabled for extraction will extend between November 1, 2026 and March 31, 2027.
