A man accused of continued mistreatment of his partner, as well as threatening and assaulting her on multiple occasions, in addition to having held her for hours in the home they shared, has accepted a sentence of five years and three months in prison. The procedure originates from the Court of Instance of Ribeira (A Coruña).
The agreement was reached in the hearing scheduled for this Monday in the first section of the Provincial Court of A Coruña, after the accused admitted the facts and an agreement was reached between the Prosecutor's Office, the private prosecution, and the defense, which allowed for a reduction of the initially requested sentence.
The sentence, which is already final, establishes, among other penalties, six months in prison for a crime of habitual mistreatment in the common home; two years for four crimes of minor injuries; another six months for a crime of continued serious threats; one year and nine months for a crime of continued coercion; and six more months for another crime of threats.
Along with the prison sentence, the convicted person must pay 6,000 euros as compensation to the victim for the moral damage derived from the set of judged facts.
Relationship and control dynamic
According to the Prosecutor's Office's written statement, both began a romantic relationship on June 17, 2025, at which point they started a "stable cohabitation" in the woman's home. After the first months of the relationship, the man began imposing on her "a progressive dynamic of control, isolation, and domination."
Among the behaviors described in the case are reproaches towards her close environment, episodes of "constant" jealousy, surveillance of the victim's mobile phone, as well as insults and threats.
In mid-2025, the accused began to physically assault her during arguments motivated by his jealousy and her refusal to leave the home. These assaults included slaps, pushes, hair pulling, and blows to the head.
The events took place, for the most part, in the home where they lived together, although some episodes also occurred at the woman's workplace, her mother's flower shop. The last reported incident began in the afternoon of December 19, when the victim's mother went to the house to ask her to help in the flower shop.
Retention in the home and arrest
Upon noticing that she had gotten ready to go out, the man began to reproach her for not really going to work and ended up closing the door of the room they were in. After placing a knife on her and threatening to harm her mother, her daughter, or herself, the accused kept her mobile phone and locked the doors of the house from the inside. Hours later, when the woman was still locked up, he assaulted her again.
This episode concluded with the man's arrest in the early morning of December 20 by the Civil Guard, who was alerted by the victim's mother at her daughter's request. As a consequence of these events, according to the Public Prosecutor's Office, the woman suffered a "great emotional impact" and physical injuries, including a superficial trauma to the head and another superficial trauma to the wrist.
