The plaque inaugurated by the City Council of Seville in tribute to Luis Cernuda within the Promenade of the Poets of the Generation of '27 will have to be replaced after two errors were detected in its inscription. The first consists of an incorrect accent in the name of the poet, where "Luís" appears instead of "Luis", while the second corresponds to an unnecessary space in the dates of birth and death.
The errors were pointed out by the Association of Friends of Vicente Aleixandre, which disseminated an image of the plaque and requested its correction. The City Council has confirmed that it will replace the inscription "as soon as possible," although at the moment it has not specified when the new plaque will be installed.
A plaque dedicated to the most universal poet of Seville
Beyond the controversy over the errors, the event served to pay tribute to Luis Cernuda with the inauguration of the second plaque of the Promenade of the Poets of the Generation of '27, a project promoted by the City Council through the Urban Planning Management to remember the main authors linked to that literary movement.
During the inauguration, the mayor of Seville, José Luis Sanz, defined Cernuda as "possibly the most universal poet that Seville has given" and emphasized that his figure was essential for the Generation of '27. He also recalled his connection with the Faculty of Law of the University of Seville, where he met Pedro Salinas, who introduced him to the literary circles of the time.
The Promenade of the Poets will progressively transform Tetuán Street into a route dedicated to the main members of the Generation of '27 through bronze plaques integrated into the pavement. Each one will include the name of the honored author, their dates of birth and death, and the identifying elements of the project.
The initiative has a participatory character and has the sponsorship of institutions, companies, groups, and individuals. According to the City Council, there are already more than twenty sponsored plaques, including those dedicated to Federico García Lorca, Rafael Alberti, Jorge Guillén, Vicente Aleixandre, Pedro Salinas, or María Zambrano.
The Casa Luis Cernuda will open on December 16
The mayor took advantage of the event to announce that the rehabilitation works of the Casa Luis Cernuda will conclude in the coming days and that its opening is scheduled for December 16, 2026, coinciding with the official start of the commemoration of the centenary of the Generation of '27.
Starting from that date, the City Council will deploy a program of activities that will include a large exhibition at the Royal Armory and a congress organized together with the University of Seville, the Ateneo of Seville, and the Royal Seville Academy of Fine Letters. The Walk of the Poets will continue to expand until it incorporates all the authors linked to the Generation of '27.
