The Monday, 9 November will be a public holiday in Madrid capital for the celebration of Nuestra Señora de la Almudena. The day, however, does not affect the entirety of the Community of Madrid, so supermarkets in other municipalities in the region may operate as normal, unless they have another local holiday.

Those planning to do their shopping in the capital should keep in mind that not all chains will follow the same calendar. Some will keep a large part of their establishments open, while others will close or apply special opening hours. There may also be differences between stores of the same company.

Which supermarkets open on 9 November in Madrid?

Mercadona will remain closed in Madrid capital during the holiday day. The chain typically keeps its supermarkets closed on Sundays and public holidays. Activity will resume on Tuesday, 10 November, with the usual hours.

In the case of Carrefour, most of its establishments in Madrid will open, although the schedule will depend on the format and location. Hypermarkets typically operate from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., while Express, Market and BIO stores may have different hours. The company allows you to check each establishment through its store locator.

Lidl also plans to keep most of its stores in the capital open, generally during its usual hours, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. However, there may be exceptions, so it is advisable to check the official supermarket search engine.

For its part, Aldi will open some of its establishments in Madrid, although not all. The hours must be checked store by store: for example, the premises at Glorieta de Cuatro Caminos, 6, and at Francisco Silvela Street, 48, have published hours from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. for 9 November. Other stores of the chain may remain closed.

At Ahorramas, some stores will open with reduced hours, generally from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., while others will remain closed. The chain lists the exceptions of each establishment in its official locator.

Specific Aldi and Ahorramas stores and opening hours

The schedules published by the establishments themselves make it possible to identify some options for shopping during the holiday. These are examples of stores in Madrid capital with announced openings for Monday, 9 November:

Aldi - Glorieta de Cuatro Caminos, 608:00–22:00

Aldi - Calle de Francisco Silvela, 4808:00–22:00

Ahorramas - Ezequiel Solana Street, 10 609:00–15:00

Ahorramas - Mar Negro Street, 20 9:00–15:00

These hours correspond to specific establishments and should not be extrapolated to the rest of the stores in the chains. Before traveling, it is recommended to check the profile of each supermarket to confirm that no changes have occurred.

What happens with DIA and Alcampo?

At DIA, opening hours may vary depending on the establishment and its format. Some neighborhood supermarkets keep their doors open during holidays, but there is no single schedule that applies to the entire chain. The most recommended option is to check the specific store in its store locator.

Alcampo may also apply different schedules depending on whether it is an hypermarket or a supermarket. Some centers reduce their hours during holidays, so it is advisable to check the establishment information before going.

The Almudena holiday only affects Madrid city

Monday, November 9, 2026 is a local holiday in the municipality of Madrid due to the celebration of Our Lady of Almudena, patroness of the city. This is not an autonomous community holiday, so towns such as Alcalá de Henares, Getafe, Leganés, Móstoles, or Alcobendas keep their usual working calendar, unless it coincides with another of their own holidays.

Thus, supermarkets located outside Madrid city may open as normal, according to the hours of each establishment.

To avoid unnecessary trips, the recommendation is to consult the chain’s official locator and check the specific store hours before leaving.
