At least four people have died and another 88 have been injured this Sunday in the collision of two passenger trains in the Egyptian province of Giza, south of Cairo. The accident occurred in the Al Ayat district, when one of the trains struck the rear of another that was traveling along the same railway line.

According to information released by the Egyptian authorities and collected by Associated Press, train number 134, which covered the route between Giza and Fayum, collided with train number 2010, which was running the route between Cairo and Aswan. The impact caused several carriages to derail.

The incident took place between the stations of Kafr Ammar and Al Riqqa, near the Gerza crossing, on the railway line that connects the Egyptian capital with the south of the country.

An emergency device with 72 ambulances

The authorities deployed a large emergency response to assist the victims and transport the injured to nearby hospital centers. According to the latest tally released by the Egyptian Ministry of Health, 72 ambulances took part in the evacuation efforts.

Of the 88 injured, 49 were taken to the Al Wasta Hospital, 29 to the Al Ayat hospital, and another ten to the Atfih health center. The medical teams continue to provide care to those affected, while the hospitals in the provinces of Giza and Beni Suef have raised their level of alert.

The Civil Protection teams and the railway services also went to the site of the accident. The railway authority has sent cranes and specialized personnel to remove the affected carriages and clear the tracks.

The Public Prosecution Service investigates the causes of the accident

The collision has forced rail traffic to be halted in both directions on the affected section of the line that connects Cairo with the south of Egypt. The work focuses on removing debris from the incident and restoring normal service.

The Public Prosecution Service has opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the accident. Specialists will have to examine the site of the impact and the conditions under which both trains were traveling.

The incident occurs in a country that has recorded other serious railway accidents in recent years. In September 2026, two freight trains also collided in the Al Ayat district, although on that occasion only the driver and his assistant were injured.
