The general secretary of CCOO, Unai Sordo, has underlined that working youth constitutes one of the fundamental reasons for the general strike set for next November 11.
"You are the main subject. On November 11 next, the streets have to be filled above all with young people. Working youth has to raise the flag, and be the protagonist of its future, because the future of organized youth is one of hope," the general secretary of Comisiones Obreras stated at the event 'Defend your class,' held this Saturday in Madrid.
During his address, Sordo stressed that "it is not true that the world is worse than it was 30 or 40 years ago." "It is a totally reactionary message," he reiterated at the meeting, in which he took part together with the general secretary of CCOO Madrid, Paloma López, and the confederal youth secretary, Pau García Orrit, among other union representatives.
The confederal youth secretary of CCOO has highlighted the symbolic dimension of the call, above all for those who will join for the first time a general strike. "We have come to make it clear that what we want is a dignified present and a dignified future. We are not going to stop and we are not going to give in to the blackmail that is trying to make us call off this strike," she said.
García Orrit also insisted on the importance of driving mobilization from within the workplaces themselves in order to move toward better living conditions for the working class. "We take responsibility now for the working class to have a better life. We transform workplaces now," he said.
The event also featured the intervention of the general secretary of CCOO Madrid, Paloma López, who focused her message on the difficulties of accessing housing in the Community of Madrid, a situation that she described as "absolutely unsustainable." López warned about the scale of the housing problem in the region and defended the urgency of placing it among the priorities of union action and mobilization.
