The Spanish banking sector cut again in June the rate of doubtful loans, which stood at 2.54%, five tenths less than in May. This percentage marks its lowest record since August 2008, according to the latest statistics on doubtful loans released this Tuesday by the Bank of Spain.

When compared to June 2025, the ratio has decreased by 31 basis points, from the 2.97% recorded then. In absolute terms, the balance of doubtful loans decreased by 272 million euros compared to May, reaching 31.697 billion, while compared to June 2025, the cut amounts to 4.594 billion euros.

The total volume of credit granted by all entities reached 1.246 trillion euros, which represents an increase of 11.567 million compared to the previous month and an increase of 26.596 million in relation to the same month in 2025.

Behavior by type of financial entity

In the case of banks, savings banks, and credit cooperatives, the ratio of doubtful loans closed June at 2.45%, four basis points below the previous month and 44 basis points less than in June 2025.

In terms of amount, these entities reduced their portfolio of doubtful loans by 255 million euros compared to May, down to 29.228 billion. Compared to a year earlier, the volume is lower by about 4.475 million euros.

The financial credit establishments, for their part, recorded in June a delinquency rate of 5%, compared to 5.28% in May, which implies a monthly decrease and a year-on-year drop of 42 basis points.

The balance of doubtful loans in these establishments stood at 2.255 billion euros at the end of June, eight million less than a month earlier. Compared to June of the previous year, the cut reaches about 149 million euros.

Provisions of the financial system

According to data from the Bank of Spain, the provisions accumulated by all credit entities stood at 26.641 billion euros, after a decrease of 141 million compared to May. In year-on-year terms, these coverages have reduced by 1.014 billion euros.
