The Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) has reported that unit 1 of the Almaraz Nuclear Power Plant "is in safe shutdown" while the causes of the incident are analyzed, which, as the regulatory body has specified, "has had no impact on the safety of the facility, on people, or on the environment".
According to the communication sent this Thursday to the CSN by the operator of the Almaraz Nuclear Power Plant, an automatic shutdown of the unit I reactor occurred when the plant was operating at full power. This shutdown "has been caused by the shutdown of the main turbine, which in turn was brought about by the operation of a protection of the alternator".
The CSN details in its note that the origin of the event would be in the operation of an electrical protection of the main transformer, a circumstance that at these moments continues to be under investigation. The communiqué emphasizes that "the safety systems have acted as expected in the design of the facility, and the plant is in safe shutdown".
The operator of the nuclear facility is carrying out the appropriate checks and verifications to ensure the correct status of the equipment affected by the incident, the regulator adds.
With the information available up to now, the CSN indicates that the event has been classified with level 0 on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES), the lowest level on the scale, which implies that it has no relevance for safety.
