The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has launched a special mobility device to organize the exceptional movements that will occur due to the total solar eclipse on August 12, which will cross the Peninsula from west to east at sunset, between A Coruña and Palma de Mallorca, around 8:30 PM.
To ensure the safest possible circulation, the General Directorate of Roads, in coordination with the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), will proactively turn on the lights of the State Road Network during the period of greatest darkness and will minimize traffic disruptions due to construction, with the aim of avoiding delays.
Renfe will reinforce the Medium Distance and Commuter services in areas where a greater concentration of observers is expected, paying special attention to the corridors of Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, the Basque Country, and northern Castilla y León. In addition, it will increase the offer of the Atlantic Axis by 1,400 seats through double composition trains.
The commercial railway offer will also include reinforcements in double composition on the connections of Levante and Catalonia (Alcázar de San Juan-Albacete-Valencia, Barcelona-Valencia, Valencia-Alicante-Murcia-Cartagena, and Valencia-Xàtiva-Alcoi). Likewise, the overall capacity of AVE and Long Distance will exceed one million seats between August 7 and 16.
In the urban environment, Commuter services will incorporate reinforcements of operational staff, customer service, and security at key stations in Galicia, Cantabria, Asturias, Castilla y León, and Rodalies de Catalunya, and will have a strategic reserve train at the Madrid station of Chamartín to cover the demand towards the mountains on line C8b.
In maritime transport, the General Directorate of Merchant Marine has issued safety recommendations for recreational vessels navigating the Cantabrian, Mediterranean, and Balearic coasts, insisting on the obligation to maintain permanent listening on VHF channel 16 and to respect the maximum authorized capacity at all times.
In parallel, Maritime Rescue will position two tugboats in Palma and A Coruña, 14 Salvamar units, 10 rescue boats, and helicopters on localized guard duty at their bases, in order to respond to any incidents at sea during the hours before and after the astronomical phenomenon.
In the airspace, Aena will activate a device in terminals and access to airports to provide practical information to passengers and will proceed to illuminate the approach runways while the eclipse lasts, although no increase in air capacity has been planned as traffic levels will remain similar to those of 2025.
Nevertheless, Aena has designed a specific operation in the terminals and land access of the airports of general interest in Spain that it manages. In this way, it will provide useful information to travelers arriving at airfields located near or within the totality band, and will activate the approach lighting for the duration of the eclipse.
Finally, the State Agency for Air Safety (AESA) has reminded of the explicit prohibition of flying drones over crowds of people and has urged users to strictly comply with the current regulations regarding the use of airspace near the observation points of the eclipse.
Likewise, it has reminded that the regulations expressly prohibit operations with drones over crowds of people, both in open category and under operational declaration (standard scenarios).
The presence of drones in places with a concentration of people can generate risk situations, especially in conditions of low visibility or changing lighting. Therefore, in case of detecting improper use of a drone, it recommends informing the Security Forces and Corps immediately.
