The spokesperson for EH Bildu in the Basque Parliament, Pello Otxandiano, has called on the PNV to reassess the meaning of its vote on the housing decree, which includes the automatic extension of rental contracts, which will be put to a vote in the Standing Committee of the Congress. In addition, he has advanced that this Friday he will address the lehendakari, Imanol Pradales, in the Basque chamber so that he details what the position of the Basque Government is on this matter.

The sovereignist coalition has registered two initiatives in Parliament related to the housing crisis and the "necessary measures to deal with it," which will be debated in the plenary sessions scheduled for this Thursday and Friday.

As EH Bildu has explained, tomorrow Otxandiano will defend a motion so that the entire Autonomous Community of the Basque Country is declared a stressed area. One day later, he will address a question to Pradales about the decree that provides for the automatic renewal of rentals and, according to the formation, will be dealt with next Thursday in the Standing Committee of the Congress of Deputies.

In a public statement, the sovereignist formation has indicated that its spokesperson will raise this issue with the lehendakari because he understands that "housing public policies are at a decisive moment." "Will public institutions be able to tackle a social crisis that harms the life expectations of broad sections of society? Yes or no?" Otxandiano will convey this in the parliamentary chamber.

Talk in Sestao about the housing crisis

As part of the talks and roundtables that EH Bildu is organizing in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country and Navarre to present its proposals to citizens in the face of the housing problem, Pello Otxandiano met this Wednesday afternoon with residents of Sestao (Bizkaia) to share his proposals.

During the meeting, he defended "the automatic renewal of rental contracts as one of the necessary structural measures to address the current situation," considering that it makes it possible "to protect tenant people and, at the same time, offer security to landlord people."

In this regard, he stressed that "the automatic renewal of rentals is one of the first necessary structural measures, which protects the tenant and, at the same time, guarantees security for the landlord. It is a European measure that is in force in many European countries and, therefore, is a Europeanizing measure."

Otxandiano recalled that the PNV positioned itself against this decree in the Congress of Deputies, and pointed out that next week it will have “a new opportunity” to modify its vote when the initiative is submitted again for consideration by the Permanent Delegation.

“Next week they will have to do it again and they have the possibility to change the direction of their vote, which would mean that the decree is approved and the measure could enter into force,” the leader of EH Bildu emphasized.

The coalition considers it “necessary” to clarify as well the position of the Basque Government on this matter, apart from the stance defended so far by the PNV in the Congress. For this reason, it will directly put the question to the lehendakari at the control plenary session on Friday.

“We know the current position of the PNV. However, we do not know the position of the Basque Government regarding this issue and we believe it is appropriate for it to be known through the words of the lehendakari himself, this Friday in the Basque Parliament,” Otxandiano concluded.
