A member of the Colombian Army has killed a soldier and left another injured after opening fire on his own comrades in the department of Boyacá this Tuesday. The shooter, belonging to the same battalion, took his own life moments later, according to the military institution.

"According to preliminary information, a professional soldier would have been involved in the incident, who fired his service weapon at a non-commissioned officer, also causing injuries to a soldier and a canine. Subsequently, he would have taken his own life," it indicated in a statement in which it conveyed "its most sincere condolences and solidarity" to the families and colleagues of the two deceased.

The incident occurred early in the morning in the municipality of Sogamoso, in the northwest of the country, where the 1st Artillery Battalion is located, and is already being investigated by the competent authorities.

"As soon as the situation was known, the corresponding institutional protocols were activated and the necessary actions were initiated to clarify the facts. In the same way, an interdisciplinary team was arranged to support the families of the deceased soldier and non-commissioned officer, as well as the medical attention for the affected," the Colombian Army added.
