The price of the butane cylinder remains at 18.84 euros during October 2026, an amount that affects the traditional regulated model of 12.5 kilograms, used by numerous Spanish households for cooking, heating water, or powering stoves. This amount came into effect on September 15, after the last official update published in the Official State Gazette (BOE), and will continue to apply until the next review, scheduled for Tuesday, November 17.
The evolution of the price of butane becomes important again with the arrival of autumn and the progressive decrease in temperatures, especially among households that depend on this fuel for heating and hot water. The increase in energy costs and tensions in international markets have led Pedro Sánchez's government to recover an extraordinary measure: to limit the maximum price of the regulated cylinder to 19.55 euros until June 30, 2027, thus preventing potential increases in the coming months from being fully passed on to consumers.
The decision is part of the measures approved by the Government to address the economic consequences of the crisis in the Middle East, which has caused new tensions in energy markets. However, it is important to differentiate between the current price, which is 18.84 euros, and the new extraordinary limit of 19.55 euros, which does not mean that all cylinders will automatically cost that amount.
How much does the butane cylinder cost in October 2026
The official price of the traditional butane cylinder of 12.5 kilos is 18.84 euros, taxes included, in the Peninsula and Balearic Islands. This rate began to apply on September 15 and corresponds to the last bimonthly review approved by the General Directorate of Energy Policy and Mines, an agency dependent on the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.
The September update represented a new increase compared to the previous price. In July, the regulated cylinder cost 17.83 euros, so the current amount represents an increase of 1.01 euros per container. The increase occurred in a context of rising raw material prices and costs associated with the transportation of liquefied petroleum gases.
The regulated amount applies to traditional gas cylinders included in the maximum price system and should not be confused with the price of lightweight butane containers, which may have different rates depending on the marketing company. It also does not apply identically in all territories, as the Canary Islands, Ceuta, and Melilla have fiscal and regulatory particularities that may modify the final price.
When will the butane price be reviewed again
The next ordinary review of the butane cylinder is scheduled for November 17, 2026, the third Tuesday of the month. This date responds to the mechanism established by the Government, which contemplates an update of the maximum prices every two months, specifically in January, March, May, July, September, and November.
The new amount is calculated taking into account various factors, including the international prices of butane and propane, maritime transport costs, and the evolution of the exchange rate between the euro and the dollar. Marketing costs and pending adjustments from previous reviews are also incorporated, according to the regulated formula.
The ordinary regulation limits the variations of the maximum price to 2% in each review, both for increases and decreases. When the calculation formula yields a variation greater than this, the difference accumulates for future updates. This mechanism aims to avoid overly sharp fluctuations in a basic energy product for numerous consumers.
Therefore, the next review does not necessarily imply a price increase, as the evolution will depend on the costs recognized in the official formula. However, the recent increase in energy markets has led the Government to establish additional protection to prevent the rate from exceeding the new extraordinary limit.
The Government limits the price of the cylinder to 19.55 euros until June 2027
The Council of Ministers approved on September 29 a new extraordinary limit for the price of butane, included in Royal Decree-Law 25/2026, which expands measures aimed at protecting consumers against the increase in energy costs. The regulation establishes that the regulated 12.5-kilo cylinder may not exceed 19.55 euros until June 30, 2027, a measure especially aimed at vulnerable households and rural areas where there is no access to natural gas networks.
This limit will start to apply with the November review and aims to recover a protection similar to that which was in force during the energy crisis caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In fact, the 19.55 euros coincide with the maximum price reached in May 2022, when the Government adopted measures to contain the impact of fuel price increases on the domestic economy.
The Ministry for Ecological Transition justifies the intervention due to the strong increase in international prices of butane and propane, to which is added the rise in maritime transport costs. According to the department's data, international prices of these raw materials reached increases close to 100% compared to their average values in 2025, while transport costs have also risen significantly.
The extraordinary limitation does not mean that the price will remain frozen at 19.55 euros for the coming months. Bimonthly reviews will continue to be carried out and the cylinder may cost less if determined by the official formula, but it cannot exceed the ceiling set by the Executive while the measure remains in force.
Which cylinders have regulated prices and which can cost more
One of the main doubts among consumers is whether the official price applies to any butane cylinder. The answer is that not all containers are subject to the same regulation system. The maximum price mainly affects traditional cylinders weighing between 8 and less than 20 kilograms that meet the characteristics established by the regulations, including the requirements related to the weight of the empty container.
On the contrary, light cylinders marketed by different companies can have free prices, so their amount may vary depending on the brand, point of sale, or supply conditions. This difference explains why some consumers find prices higher than the regulated maximum when purchasing certain models of containers.
It is also worth noting that the reference price of 18.84 euros includes the applicable taxes in the Peninsula and Balearic Islands. In the Canary Islands, Ceuta, and Melilla, there are tax particularities and specific rules regarding certain marketing costs, so the final amount may be different.
To avoid confusion, consumers must check the type of cylinder they use and consult whether it is within the maximum price regime. In the case of the regulated traditional cylinder, the official price does not depend on daily market fluctuations, but on the revisions approved by the Administration.
Butane, an important expense for households during winter
The arrival of the colder months usually increases domestic consumption of butane, especially in homes that use portable stoves or heaters powered by this fuel. The monthly cost will depend on the number of cylinders used, the type of appliance, and the hours of operation, so the impact of a price increase can be very different from one household to another.
For example, a family that consumes two cylinders a month will currently pay 37.68 euros, while a consumption of three containers will mean 56.52 euros monthly. If in future revisions the limit of 19.55 euros established by the Government is reached, two cylinders would cost 39.10 euros and three would mean an outlay of 58.65 euros.
The protection approved by the Executive seeks precisely to reduce these consumers' exposure to international fluctuations in fossil fuels. However, the mechanism contemplates that the differences between the calculated price and the effectively applied price can be recovered through subsequent revisions, which means that the temporary limitation does not necessarily eliminate all accumulated increases in supply costs.
What will happen to the price of butane in November
The next date that consumers should keep in mind will be Tuesday, November 17, when the new bimonthly update will come into effect. Until then, the traditional 12.5-kilo cylinder will continue to cost 18.84 euros, unless an extraordinary regulatory modification is approved.
The main novelty compared to previous revisions will be the application of the maximum limit of 19.55 euros, approved by the Government until the end of June 2027. In this way, even if the evolution of international markets justified a higher increase, the regulated rate must respect the established ceiling.
With the arrival of winter and the uncertainty about energy prices, the cost of butane becomes a relevant issue for the economy of thousands of Spanish families. For now, the reference is clear: 18.84 euros during October and a new review on November 17, when it will be known whether the price remains, rises, or falls within the limits set by the regulations.
