The French Prosecutor's Office reported this Tuesday the arrest of a 34-year-old man for his alleged participation in the intentional fire of the Town Hall of Limoges, recorded last Saturday, on a day marked by massive protests across the country that led to serious disturbances.
The arrested man is a male originally from Paris who was located and arrested in Val d'Issoire, a town near Limoges, within the department of Haute-Vienne.
According to the French television channel RTL, the suspect was already known to the security forces and was considered by the authorities to be a threat to public safety due to a history of violence against officials.
The same outlet notes that the arrested individual is on the "S list" of French security surveillance, while the Prosecutor's Office has confirmed that the anti-terrorism unit has taken over the investigation of the case.
The Town Hall building, classified as a historical monument, was practically devastated after the fire set by the rioters last Saturday in this city of about 130,000 inhabitants. The bell tower of the building, a structure from the 17th century, ended up collapsing due to the flames.
It is expected that the French Prime Minister, Sébastien Lecornu, will travel to Limoges this Friday to visit the affected area.
