The president of the United States, Donald Trump, and the acting president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, held a private meeting this Tuesday in New York that the Venezuelan leader has described as "historic." The meeting took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly and represents the first face-to-face between the two since Rodríguez took power in Miraflores.
"We have held a historic meeting with the president of the United States, Donald Trump, with whom we discussed strengthening the bilateral relationship between our countries and advancing a cooperation agenda in strategic areas such as energy, mining, and security," the Venezuelan leader announced in a social media post.
The face-to-face occurs after the arrival, the day before, of the Venezuelan representative to the city of New York to participate in the General Debate of the UN General Assembly, a trip that the Caracas government has presented as a success of Venezuelan diplomacy.
During her stay in the United States, it is expected that the leader will speak this Thursday before the plenary of the international organization.
Delcy Rodríguez's trip is also framed in a moment of progressive rapprochement between Caracas and Washington. According to information released by the U.S. Administration and reproduced by Venezuelan media, President Donald Trump was considering the possibility of holding an informal meeting with Rodríguez this Tuesday, on the sidelines of the official agenda of the General Assembly.
