The journalist and aspiring regional governor of Áncash, in Peru, Susy Isabel Aponte Polo, popularly known as "La China Polo" and murdered last Saturday, had pointed out on September 10 to the head of Criminal Investigation of the National Police, Víctor Revoredo Farfán, whom she blamed for planning her murder.
"From three prisons, I have received calls warning me that this Mr. Víctor Revoredo Farfán has ordered an attack against me. I have already filed the complaint with the corresponding entities," she stated, according to the Peruvian newspaper "La República".
"I tell you, Mr. Revoredo: here we need to stop the macho. Here we should not act like cowards, as you have the habit of doing. What is the fear? That I expose all your filth?" she added.
Aponte was shot dead this Saturday during a campaign event in the city of Caraz, in the northwest of the country. The attack occurred around 12:40 PM, when she was walking on the public road accompanied by supporters while distributing campaign material. A man pulled out a firearm and fired several shots at her before fleeing. At least five other people were injured in the shooting.
Minutes later, security forces arrested a Venezuelan citizen identified as Luis Obispo Díaz, 29 years old, who was found with a pistol. So far, neither the Police nor Revoredo himself have provided explanations about the possible motive for the crime.
That same Saturday, hours before being murdered, Aponte had announced the publication of a report on the history of Lalo Villa, candidate for the Mayor of Huaraz for Alianza para el Progreso (APP), in which she linked the party to water management in Áncash and with actions that would extend to the areas of Ferreñafe and Chiclayo. In August, she had also made public complaints about alleged favors in the Judiciary related to processes involving television presenter Magaly Medina.
