The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Council, António Costa, and the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, have conveyed the support and closeness of the community institutions to the victims of the serious railway accident recorded early this Wednesday in Urda (Toledo), where an AVE and an Iryo that covered the Madrid-Seville route have collided.

Von der Leyen has written on social media: "I have just received the devastating news from Toledo about the collision of two high-speed trains. My heart is with the families and loved ones of the victims", to conclude with a shared message of mourning: "Today Europe mourns with you".

In a parallel statement, the president of the European Council has expressed "All my support for the Spanish people in these hours of pain" and has indicated that he receives "with deep consternation the news of the tragic railway accident that occurred in Toledo", also underlining the work of the emergency teams, whom he has thanked for their response.

Costa has added in his message: "My sincerest condolences to the relatives and loved ones of the deceased victims. All my solidarity with the injured, whom I wish a speedy recovery".

For her part, the president of the European Parliament has declared herself "deeply distressed" and has wanted to convey her "sincerest gratitude" to the emergency services "who are working tirelessly at the scene of the accident", emphasizing that "Spain is in my thoughts and my heart".

In another message also shared on social media and written in Spanish, Metsola has said: "I share in the grief of the relatives and friends of the deceased victims in the face of the irreparable loss of their loved ones, and I wish the injured a speedy and full recovery".
