The Italian Executive has agreed this Wednesday to extend the controls at its borders for 15 more days for travelers arriving by sea or by air from Spain, understanding that the circumstances that initially motivated this decision remain after the massive entry of migrants into the autonomous city of Ceuta at the end of July.
The Italian Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, has again approved this measure after consulting the Immigration and Border Security Analysis Committee, which met during the day, according to the state news agency ANSA.
The ministerial department has thus agreed to a third extension of these border controls, arguing that "there are still critical problems" and that hardly any progress has been recorded in Ceuta months after the arrival of tens of thousands of migrants from Moroccan territory.
The decision has already been communicated to the European Commission and to the interior ministers of the other countries of the European Union, just a few hours before the celebration of the Justice and Home Affairs Council.
In this meeting, Piantedosi pointed out, the European Commission will present "an action plan to prevent and combat the massive and sudden arrivals of illegal migrants, with the aim of strengthening cooperation among member states, consolidating the EU's external borders, dismantling human trafficking, and enhancing repatriations."
