The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, expressed this Tuesday his deep concern about the intensification of daily attacks against Kiev and other locations in Ukraine, as well as the increase in civilian casualties resulting from the operations of the Russian Armed Forces on Ukrainian territory, in the context of the invasion initiated in February 2022 by order of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin.
The head of the UN is especially worried about the magnitude that the bombings on the capital are reaching and about the data conveyed to the organization, which indicate that the Russian offensives are "causing a record number of civilian casualties," as explained at a press conference by the spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric.
Among the attacks that have generated the most alarm is the one recorded this week against the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, located in Kiev.
At the same time, Guterres has focused on the increase in civilian casualties caused by the "increasingly frequent" attacks by Ukrainian forces against Russian territory and has condemned "all attacks directed against civilians and civilian infrastructure, wherever they occur," referring to the situation in both countries.
In this scenario, the United Nations has reiterated its call to immediately stop the escalation dynamics accompanying the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and has emphasized the urgency of "redoubling diplomatic efforts" in order to move towards an "immediate, complete, and unconditional" ceasefire.
According to the position expressed by his spokesperson, that ceasefire should be the starting point to subsequently achieve a "just, comprehensive, and lasting" peace solution for Ukraine.
"The United Nations is willing to support all meaningful efforts in that regard," Dujarric emphasized, reiterating the organization's willingness to back diplomatic initiatives aimed at ending hostilities.
This message coincides with the announcement from Ukrainian authorities, who have confirmed the death of a dozen people and around 200 injured as a result of the attacks launched by the Armed Forces of Russia against Kiev during the last week, an offensive that has continued through the past night.
