The Moroccan security forces have resorted this Thursday to the use of water cannons in the municipality of Castillejos with the aim of dispersing the thousands of people who remain in the streets trying to reach the Spanish city of Ceuta on foot.
According to information disseminated by the news portal Ajbarona, based in Tetouan, the agents have proceeded to dissolve the crowd through police charges and water cannons. At the same time, in the squares of numerous towns in the country, celebrations continue for the anniversary of the enthronement of the Moroccan king, Mohammed VI.
Ceuta has experienced this Thursday its most serious migratory episode since May 2021, with the arrival for several hours of thousands of people, mostly young Moroccans, although also families with women and minors, who have managed to enter the autonomous city by skirting the Tarajal pier and overcoming the border fence.
In light of the worsening situation, Spain and Morocco have decided to intensify their coordination with the purpose of returning "as soon as possible" all the people who have accessed irregularly, while the president of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, has emphasized that both nations are collaborating to restore normalcy. For his part, the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, will travel this Friday to the area to manage the crisis on the ground.
