The mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, reported this Saturday that the president of the United States, Donald Trump, has given the green light to the granting of a visa for the mother of a 15-year-old teenager who was murdered last Thursday when he was heading in the morning to his school.
"The murder of a child is a pain that no parent should have to endure, and much less from thousands of miles away," Mamdani declared in a statement on his social media.
The young man, identified as Javits Frimpong, had moved from Ghana to New York a little over a year ago to reunite with his father. He was shot while walking to school and was evacuated to Santa Barnabas Hospital, where he later died, according to authorities.
For now no arrests have been made and, according to the initial investigations, the Police are looking for three teenagers who would have been recorded by security cameras while fleeing the scene of the crime.
"Javits Frimpong's mother deserves to say goodbye to her son in person. I just spoke by phone with President Trump and he has agreed to grant her a visa immediately," the Democratic mayor has assured.
In an unusual decision on the part of the White House, it has still not been specified what kind of visa Frimpong's mother, who resides in Ghana, will receive. The boy's murder has shaken the New York community and has sparked a succession of vigils in different parts of the city.
On the other hand, Ghana's Foreign Minister, Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, has pointed out in a statement that "he will work tirelessly with the U.S. authorities to ensure that justice is done".
