The head of the list of Compromís-Front Valencià, Àgueda Micó, has said that the first proposal that her formation will file in Congress after the general elections will be the reactivation of the investigative commission into the 2024 dana. At the same time, she has censured PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo for "keeping protecting and allowing" the former president of the Valencian Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, to continue as an autonomous deputy, holding legal status "and with his privileges".

This commission, which began its work a year ago, was suspended without conclusions or a definitive ruling due to the dissolution of the Cortes following the electoral call. Through this body Mazón, Feijóo and other officials involved in managing the catastrophe passed on two occasions, but several mayors from affected municipalities and representatives from the coalition government were still pending to testify.

At a media appearance at the doors of Congress, Micó has recalled that the dana that struck the province of Valencia two years ago entailed a "humanitarian and ecological" tragedy, but also "political". In this regard, she has held Feijóo responsible for "having allowed" Mazón not to present his resignation until a year after the disaster and for going to Valencia "to applaud him once and again and again".

Criticism of the PP's political ethics

For the former parliamentarian of the Grupo Mixto, the conduct of the PP and of Feijóo in this matter reflects a "superlative hypocrisy" and she believes that the 'populars' lack legitimacy to give "any lessons" to Valencian citizens. Micó has stressed that her party "we will continue to demand in Congress truth, justice and reparation".

The candidate has also claimed that the list with which they are running for the elections—which includes Compromís, IU, Podemos, Recortes Cero and Esquerra Republicana in the three Valencian constituencies—is a commitment to unity on the left. Her goal, she explained, is to achieve its own parliamentary group to "defend the interests" of the community and "stop" both the right and the far right.

Accusations against Mazón and the Valencian PP

On the other hand, the head of the list of Front Valencià for Alicante, María Teresa Pérez, from Podemos, has insisted on her criticisms that Mazón should continue as an autonomous deputy and as a privileged litigant, a condition which, in her view, allows him to “evade Justice.” She has also denounced that the former president enjoys a free home in Alicante, as well as a driver and an advisor, and she has accused him of “going to the beach during working hours” instead of attending to his obligations in Les Corts.

“We are not satisfied with his resignation because the problem was not only Carlos Mazón. The problem is an entire PP that keeps protecting him,” Pérez has stressed, who has also criticized Feijóo for now “not endorsing his management despite having supported him previously.”

The also coordinator of Podemos in the Valencian Community has referred to the upcoming trial in the corruption case of Les Naus, in which, as she has denounced, relatives and senior officials of the PP in Alicante would have irregularly benefited from 90 units of public protected housing.

Housing measures and criticism of vulture funds

In the final stretch of the appearance, the “number two” of the Compromís Front Valencià candidacy, Alberto Ibáñez, has placed the problem of access to housing as one of the central axes of the campaign. He has reproached the PSOE for not having pushed forward measures “bold enough” during the legislature and has attacked Feijóo for, as he has said, “criminalizing protest and pursuing unions.”

In this context, Ibáñez has called for supporting the general strike on the coming 11 November and has defended the need to veto the purchase of properties by vulture funds, as well as to recover a law that would allow expropriating their assets to increase the public housing stock.

Likewise, the Sumar deputy has advanced that the new candidacy will, within the framework of European Union community law, propose a ban on acquiring housing for non-residents in those constituencies where purchases by this group exceed 20% of transactions.

The candidate has also shown his support for the validation of the two housing decrees that will be debated in the Permanent Commission of the Congress on the day 12, although he has warned that it is essential to complement them with “more forceful” measures against real estate speculation.
