The Congress's Territorial Policy Commission has backed a proposal by Compromís this Wednesday that opens the door to launching citizen consultations on the tourism development model in each municipality, among other related aspects.
The initiative, defended by Compromís deputy Águeda Micó, was approved with the favorable votes of PSOE, Sumar, Junts, ERC, and EH Bildu, while PP and Vox showed their rejection.
The approved text calls on the Government to implement citizen participation formulas to decide on tourism development at the municipal level, also guaranteeing public and accessible information on economic, environmental, and social impacts.
Likewise, the proposal demands that the Executive recognize "predatory tourism" as a risk to territorial, social, and environmental balance, and set criteria for detecting and monitoring the most affected areas.
In this regard, it proposes that Valencian administrations with competencies can apply ordinances and local control instruments to curb the massive concentration of tourist accommodations and speculative activities in the most sensitive areas.
Faced with this scenario, the Compromís deputy urges the Government to promote sustainable and proximity tourism models, prioritizing projects that generate stable employment and "respect" for the natural and cultural heritage of the territory.
Another section of the initiative focuses on launching awareness campaigns about the "effects of predatory tourism," as well as the creation of a state observatory, with the participation of the autonomous communities, responsible for preparing annual reports and recommendations to coordinate public policies and strengthen effective controls.
