The president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has described this Tuesday as "political causes" the judicial processes affecting his brother, David Sánchez, and his wife, Begoña Gómez, emphasizing that both are "two people with backgrounds of integrity and professionalism."
In the press conference held at Moncloa to take stock of the political course before the summer break, Sánchez took the opportunity to emphasize that, beyond the family bond, both David Sánchez and Begoña Gómez are "two professionals."
"Evidently Begoña Gómez is my wife and David Sánchez is my brother, but they are Begoña Gómez and David Sánchez, two people who throughout their lives have done nothing but work and train," he emphasized.
Regarding his brother's background, he highlighted that he has a degree in Economics from ICADE and also in Composition and Orchestra Conducting from the Russian University of St. Petersburg, where he lived for six years, in addition to mastering Russian, English, French, and Italian.
"He is not just my brother, he is fundamentally David Sánchez. And therefore, in a guarantee system like ours, he has every right to appeal this sentence that he considers unjust and we hope that other instances will agree with him," Sánchez pointed out.
Begoña Gómez's resignation from her company
Regarding his wife, the head of the Executive recalled that they met at 30 years old, when she had already accumulated more than a decade at the helm of her own company, an activity she left in 2018 after Sánchez arrived at Moncloa. "She resigned from her company. And she did it to avoid any conflict of interest and any type of problem that could arise, even if it were artificial and intentional," he highlighted, lamenting that, in his view, this is precisely what has ended up happening.
"But she was a professional before I met her, and before I was the general secretary of the PSOE, she was already collaborating at the Complutense University with some master's programs and postgraduate studies that she led and designed. Therefore, she is not my wife, she is Begoña Gómez. I say this because on many occasions, with that type of strategy, what is done is dehumanize people who have a background of integration and professionalism," Sánchez complained.
In this context, he has insisted that his partner even sacrificed "a good part of her professional development" because he was elected president of the Government. "The question we have to ask ourselves is, does the partner of a president have to give up their professional career? Is that the Spain we want?".
Criticism of the popular accusations and the Prosecutor's Office
The president has used the expression political causes when asked about some words from the Minister of Transport, Óscar López, who weeks ago denounced the existence of actors seeking to "overthrow the Government by non-democratic methods".
Sánchez has emphasized that neither in the case of his brother nor in that of his wife did the Prosecutor's Office request the dismissal and that, in the case of Gómez, despite investigating a possible crime of embezzlement, "the State Attorney has not even been requested, which, in theory, is there to defend the interests of the Public Administration".
"So, what do we have left? What have you echoed in the media? The popular accusations? Are the popular accusations not driving a political cause? I believe that is not an opinion, that is a fact," the president of the Government has assured.
In his view, it is "evident" that "there is an intentionality on the part of these popular accusations" promoted by Vox and PP, which participate in the proceedings through this legal figure, which the Government intends to limit and which, according to Sánchez, only serves to request an increase in prison sentences in these cases. "Those are the proposals they are making. That is the type of opposition we have," he concluded, in a critical tone.
