The spokesperson for Justice and Interior of Sumar in Congress, Enrique Santiago, a leader of Izquierda Unida, stated this Wednesday, after learning of the ruling that indicts the former socialist president José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero for influence peddling, that the time has come to "properly regulate all activities" of former Prime Ministers and emphasized that "charging for political dealings is a crime."

While on Tuesday several spokespersons for Sumar interpreted Zapatero's indictment as an alleged case of 'lawfare', after the ruling by the National Court judge José Luis Calama was made public, the Justice spokesperson opted to focus on other aspects: "The first thing that is necessary in this country is to properly regulate all the activities of former Prime Ministers. That is something that is very clear," he emphasized, after insisting the previous day that there were no incompatibilities.

Furthermore, in statements in the corridors of Congress, he issued an additional warning: "And second: certainly, if amounts have been charged for political dealings, that is a crime, clearly," Santiago reiterated.
