The Secretary General of the People's Party, Miguel Tellado, has called this Saturday for the convening of general elections, understanding that the legislature "is finished." Furthermore, he has requested the resignation of the Director General of the Civil Guard and the president of SEPI following their respective judicial indictments, during a visit to the XVI Feirón Medieval dos Andrade in Pontedeume (A Coruña).
In his appearance before the media, Tellado stated that Pedro Sánchez's Executive is going through a situation of "extreme gravity" and maintained that the Government has "more indicted individuals than deputies," claiming there are "126 indicted individuals compared to the 121 deputies" who support the Executive in Congress.
The PP leader insisted that Sánchez must "assume the reality of his Government" and "yield the floor to the citizens by calling elections," recalling that both the Congress and the Senate have urged the president to undergo a vote of confidence and to bring forward the elections.
At the same time, he described the indictment of the Director General of the Civil Guard, Mercedes González, as "unacceptable" and considered that she should have left her post "already." He also demanded political accountability from the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, whom he accused of having "lied" both to the media and in parliamentary sessions.
Calls for a change at SEPI
In the same vein, he called for the dismissal of the president of SEPI, considering it "untenable" for her to remain at the head of the organization while being investigated by the justice system. In Tellado's opinion, the Government has decided not to accept further resignations because, as he said, it would cause "a real collapse" in the Executive.
The Secretary General of the PP reiterated that the President of the Government intends to govern "with his back to the citizens and the legislative power" and argued that the only way out of the current political situation is the calling of general elections.
When asked about the situation in the Civil Guard, he insisted again that both the Director General and the Deputy Operational Director must leave their responsibilities, and pointed out that the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, has the necessary tools to push for these dismissals.
Support for the PP candidate in Pontedeume
During his stay in Pontedeume, Tellado has also expressed his support for the PP candidate for Mayor in the 2027 municipal elections, Iglesias Villanueva, of whom he stressed that he embodies "an alternative for change" for the municipality.
The popular leader has lashed out at the management of the current mayor, Bernardo Fernández Piñeiro (PSOE), stating that, after twelve years at the head of the City Council, the town drags "the same old problems." In this line, he has defended that Pontedeume needs "a committed team" with the municipality and has shown his confidence that the popular aspirant can recover the Mayor's office for the PP.
Tellado has added that a coincidence of Popular Party governments in the City Council, the Xunta, and the Central Executive would boost the development of the municipality and has encouraged the candidacy to tour the town in the coming months to publicize their project for the 2027 municipal elections.
