Javier Maroto and Javier Iglesias, representing the PP, and Clara Martín, for the Socialist Party, have assumed this Tuesday, September 15, their positions as regional senators for Castilla y León at the beginning of the plenary session taking place in the upper chamber.
The three new regional senators have been called by the president of the Senate, Pedro Rollán, who, according to the usual protocol, has required the parliamentarians to abide by the Spanish Constitution. The 'popular' have opted for the oath, while the socialist representative has chosen the promise formula.
Maroto, Iglesias, and Martín were elected regional senators for Castilla y León in the plenary of the Cortes held last Thursday, the 10th, with the support of their respective parliamentary groups after a secret ballot in which 19 blank ballots were counted --the Vox Parliamentary Group has 14 representatives and the Mixed Group has five--.
Unlike what happened in the government agreements between PP and Vox in Aragón and Extremadura, in Castilla y León the Popular Party has not handed over any of the regional senator seats to Santiago Abascal's formation.
The election of Maroto, Iglesias, and Martín as regional senators for Castilla y León took place in the first ordinary plenary of the XII Legislature, constituted on April 14 after the regional elections on March 15, in which the PP prevailed in votes and seats, with the PSOE as the second force, a result that translates into these three representatives in the upper chamber for both parties.
Castilla y León designates its three regional senators in application of article 69.5 of the Constitution and article 24.5 of the Statute of Autonomy, which entrusts the Cortes with the election of these representatives in proportion to the composition of the Chamber and at the proposal of the different parliamentary groups.
The PP has decided to maintain as senator the Vitorian registered in Sotosalbos (Segovia) Javier Maroto, elected for the first time as regional senator for Castilla y León on July 23, 2019, and reelected on May 10, 2022, after the early elections of that year, in which the PP obtained two regional senators. One of them is Maroto himself, current vice president of the Upper Chamber, and the other was Vidal Galicia, whom is now replaced by the president of the Salamanca Provincial Council, Javier Iglesias, who will leave the Presidency of the provincial Institution, which he accessed in 2011, although both positions are formally compatible.
In the Socialist Group, the proposed person has been the Segovian Clara Martín, who was mayor of Segovia from June 4, 2022, after the resignation of Clara Luquero, until June 2023, in a maneuver by the PSOE aimed at recovering the Mayor’s Office of the city of the Aqueduct, as explained by the regional secretary, Carlos Martínez.
Clara Martín replaces as regional senator Luis Tudanca, who was appointed senator by the Cortes of Castilla y León on April 30, 2025, in replacement of the Salamanca native Fran Díaz.
