A father and his son, allegedly assaulted in Ferrol by another young man and his father with a katana and a machete, have denied that there were any prior "rifts" between them during the trial held this Tuesday at the Provincial Court of A Coruña.
"They went at him," declared one of the injured men at the hearing, in which his father and his partner also testified, present on the day of the events, as well as several officers. The accused are scheduled to appear in the final session of the trial to explain their version.
"The son attacked me from behind," said the assaulted father. He recounted that "I was with my son and my daughter-in-law, I was going to park and they got out of the car" when they crossed paths with one of the accused, the father, who addressed his son with the phrase "if I don't catch you today, I'll catch you tomorrow".
According to his statement, the accused man then took a katana and, shortly after, felt a blow from behind. Both his son and the latter's girlfriend attributed that assault to the young defendant, who, they said, was carrying a machete.
"There was no rift, we were childhood friends," insisted the older victim, along the same lines as his son and the latter's girlfriend, who reiterated that there was no "previous rift or provocation," and also added the accusation of an attempted run-over.
The Prosecutor's account
According to the Public Prosecutor's brief, at around 10:45 p.m. on October 31, 2025, the accused father was in his van on Avenida de Vigo in Ferrol when, for reasons not clarified, he began an argument with the other two men, also father and son.
Immediately afterward, he started up the van and drove about 100 meters in the opposite direction to traffic until stopping in Plaza Camilo José Cela. The other two men followed him to that point, where the defendant got out of the vehicle with "a large bladed weapon, specifically a katana," as was detailed in the courtroom.
While arguing with them, the other accused appeared, the first one's son, "carrying another large machete with which he dealt one of the men a strong blow to the head," according to the prosecution's version.
Next, a violent assault took place between the accused father and son and the two victims. For the Prosecutor's Office, both acted with the intention of "ending their lives." The assaulted men tried to defend themselves using chairs from the terrace of a nearby café.
At a later moment, one of the defendants got back into the van and "setting off at high speed toward them with the intention of running them over to cause their death, although he did not succeed because they dodged his action and both victims ran off to take refuge in an entranceway".
The Public Prosecutor’s Office, in agreement with the private prosecution, considers the facts to constitute two offenses of attempted murder. It requests for the accused father sentences of twelve years in prison for each of them and for his son 14 years in prison for each offense. The defense is seeking acquittal, although it has announced that in the last session it will modify its conclusions to raise self-defense in the case of the young defendant.
