A 62-year-old man has died and another eleven people have been injured, two of them seriously, in a fire that broke out this Sunday morning in a residential block of Guadarrama (Madrid). The fire started on the ground floor of the building, located at number 26 Nuevo Guadarrama Street, and it has caused a significant buildup of smoke in the stairwell and in several homes.
The Emergency 112 service of the Community of Madrid received the alert at 06:05 hours. Nine firefighting units from the Community of Madrid were sent to the scene. They evacuated the building and had to rescue three people who had been left partially trapped, as well as two dogs.
Two seriously injured, transferred to La Paz hospital
SUMMA 112 treated twelve people, including the man who died, who was in cardiorespiratory arrest due to smoke inhalation. The medical staff carried out resuscitation maneuvers for approximately thirty minutes, but they were unable to reverse the situation.
The other eleven people were affected by smoke inhalation. Two of them—one 50-year-old woman and a 11-year-old minor—were transferred in serious condition to the La Paz Hospital. Among the injured there are four minors; the rest have minor injuries. Cruz Roja and Guadarrama Civil Protection also collaborated in the operation, while the Local Police intervened in the area.
The fire has already been extinguished
The Community of Madrid Firefighter officer, Justo Fernández, explained that the first units encountered a fire that was highly developed on the ground floor, whose smoke had invaded the stairwell void and reached various homes.
Once the fire had been put out, the personnel reviewed twelve homes affected by smoke and another four that remained closed, with no indication that there were residents inside. Subsequently, they proceeded to ventilate the rooms.
The Civil Guard has taken charge of the investigation to clarify the circumstances of the fire. For the moment, the cause that triggered the fire has not been reported.
