The president of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Salvador Illa, has highlighted that the elections of next 29 November are also played out in terms of European values and he has stressed that they will be the first of a series of election appointments in the community sphere in “great countries that are very relevant”.
He said this this Sunday at the gala of the IV Premi als Valors Europeus of the PSC, in which the former Secretary General of NATO and former Socialist minister, Javier Solana, was honored. At the event, the PSC member of the European Parliament, Laura Ballarín, and the Vice President of the European Parliament, Javi López, also took part.
Illa referred to the upcoming elections scheduled in France, Poland and Italy and he underlined that, on the international stage, it is “obvious” that it is necessary to maintain the best possible relations with the countries in the surrounding area.
In referring to the latest electoral processes held in Brazil, the United States and Israel, he stated that their results constitute an “encouraging sign”.
“Citizens say no; we don’t want a world governed by force, by hatred, by aggression. We want a world where differences can be resolved in another way and above all we want the well-being of citizens to be put at the center of all policies,” he added.
Statements by Ballarín, López and Solana
During the ceremony, Ballarín put the focus on the fact that the awarding of the prize takes place at a time when “the values that have underpinned the European project are ‘in danger’” and when major powers openly question the multilateral order.
For his part, López pointed out that today’s Spain does not resemble that of 50 years ago and that it is now a voice with weight on the international stage. He insisted that “the influence of Spain in the world is represented like no one else by Javier Solana”.
Finally, Solana expressed his gratitude for the recognition and recalled that he was one of the people who “worked the most so that the PSC would exist” and so that democratic socialism could reach the presence it has today.
