Italy's Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has conveyed this Wednesday the solidarity of the Italian Government with Spain after the railway accident recorded in the vicinity of Urda (Toledo), where the collision between an Iryo train and an AVE has left at least 39 dead, according to the report provided by Emergencias Castilla-La Mancha.

Through a message of condolences, the Italian leader has expressed her closeness to the Spanish people in the face of the magnitude of the tragedy and has conveyed the support of her Executive both to the families of the victims and to the injured and to the emergency services working at the scene of the accident. "In these very difficult hours, the Italian Government is close to Spain and the Spanish people because of the dramatic railway accident that occurred in the vicinity of Toledo", Meloni has said.

The Prime Minister has wanted to extend her message to all the people affected by the collision, with an express mention of those participating in the assistance and rescue work. "My thoughts and those of our entire Government go to the families of the victims, to the injured and to all those who are working tirelessly in the rescue operations", she has added.

Italy conveys its solidarity in the face of the tragedy

Meloni's statement is one of the first international reactions to the railway accident, which has forced the interruption of high-speed traffic between Madrid and Andalusia while the emergency services continue working in the area.

The head of the Italian Executive has wanted to convey an institutional message of support on behalf of her entire Government, putting the focus on the families of the victims and on the professionals mobilized to deal with the consequences of the accident.

Her reaction comes on a day marked by the suspension of much of Spanish political activity. Both the Partido Popular and the PSOE have canceled their respective campaign schedules throughout the national territory, while Vox has decided to maintain the pre-campaign events of Santiago Abascal planned in Santander and Valladolid. The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has also suspended his participation in the closing of the World Obesity Summit 2026, scheduled at the Ministry of Health, to closely follow the evolution of the situation.

At least 39 dead in the collision

The accident occurred this Wednesday, October 28, near the Urda station, in the province of Toledo. According to the first information provided by sources from the 112 emergency service to EFE, two carriages have plunged down an embankment as a consequence of the collision between both trains.

Adif has suspended high-speed rail traffic between Madrid and Andalusia, without a forecast yet having been specified for its restoration. Emergency teams remain deployed at the scene of the accident, while the authorities work to clarify the circumstances of the crash and determine the definitive extent of the tragedy.
