Robots that recognize emotions and an AI to study urban fragmentation have been the protagonists in the awards for the best Final Degree Projects on Artificial Intelligence presented at Andalusian universities, promoted by Sopra Steria within the framework of the IV Congress of Artificial Intelligence of Andalucía, held in Granada from October 26 to 28. In this edition, 56 candidacies have been received, with an average grade of excellent.

The awards ceremony was held on October 28 at the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Granada, venue of the IV Congress of Artificial Intelligence of Andalucía, organized by the Junta de Andalucía through the Agencia Digital de Andalucía. This meeting brings together annually specialists, academics and institutional officials to analyze the present and future of AI in multiple fields.

The jury, made up of doctors and teachers from various Andalusian universities together with professionals from Sopra Steria, has highlighted the extraordinary level of the works presented: 56 projects with an average grade of excellent, specifically a 9.7 out of 10.

The best TFG

The first prize in the TFG category has gone to Eulogio Quemada Torres, from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Informática of the Universidad de Málaga, for his work titled "Sistema Multimodal de Interacción Humano-Robot basado en técnicas de IA". The project designs and validates a system that allows a social robot to perceive, interpret and respond to people in a natural and contextual way, combining computer vision, facial recognition, language models, voice synthesis and physical control of the robot. Its main contribution consists of the complete, decoupled and reusable integration of heterogeneous technologies on a real robotic platform, with possible uses in assistance, public service, education and research.

The second prize in this category has gone to Bruno Paniagua García, from the E.T.S. de Ingenierías Informática y de Telecomunicación of the University of Granada, with his work "Co-design of Red-Blue Team Agents with Artificial Intelligence: Reinforcement Learning for Ransomware in Purple Team Environments". The project uses artificial intelligence to recreate attacks and defenses against cyberthreats, making it possible to train and evaluate protection strategies in simulated environments. In addition, it incorporates its own platform that automates ransomware scenarios in order to strengthen preparedness for this type of incident.

The best TFM

The award for best TFM has gone to David Fernández Martínez, from the E.T.S. de Ingenierías Informática y de Telecomunicación of the University of Granada, for his work "Explainable artificial intelligence for the study of urban fragmentation: Comparative analysis of the performance and interpretability of supervised learning models for the classification of residential enclosure patterns". The project implements an Explainable AI (XAI) system to study how the design of urban spaces favors social disconnection between neighborhoods, and culminates in an interactive public-access platform that allows the research community to classify new residential developments.

The second prize in the TFM category has gone to Francesc Rodríguez Díaz, from the Centro de Estudios de Postgrado of the Universidad Pablo de Olavide, with his work "Design of hybrid architectures and efficient strategies for sustainable quantum machine learning". The research proposes new strategies to increase the efficiency of artificial intelligence systems based on quantum computing, reducing the resources required and increasing their tolerance to errors. The results have been tested on real IBM Quantum equipment.

Overall, the distinguished works show the diversity and degree of maturity that research in artificial intelligence has reached at Andalusian universities.

"The quality and level of the works presented reflect the enormous talent that exists in our universities and the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in all sectors. For us, supporting initiatives such as the Andalusia Artificial Intelligence Congress and recognizing the effort of young researchers is fundamental to driving technological development and continuing to position the Community as a benchmark in innovation," declared Diego Guerrero, Director of Public Administrations and Territories at Sopra Steria.
