The Association Víctimas Mortales DANA 29-O has reproached this Tuesday the president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, that, a year after Carlos Mazón's resignation as head of the Generalitat Valenciana, he continues occupying his seat as deputy in Les Corts and has urged him to withdraw his support.
In a note released coinciding with the first anniversary of that resignation, produced a few days after the state funeral for the victims, the entity recalls that that resignation was "forced by the citizenry" and reproaches that "it came late, too late, after a year and five days of lies, contradictions and lack of assumption of responsibilities for the management of the dana of October 29, 2024".
"But a year later, Mazón continues occupying seat 98 of Les Corts Valencianes, protected by parliamentary immunity and collecting a public salary", laments the association, which emphasizes that, moreover, the PP "appointed him spokesperson of a parliamentary committee that has not met for years, with a salary supplement of more than 600 euros monthly".
The organization, chaired by Rosa Álvarez, assures that the families have not left behind what happened on October 29: "Neither the hours without warnings to the population, nor the absence of truthful information, nor the contradictory explanations, nor the responsibilities that we continue to demand".
For this reason, it questions whether "this is what the Popular Party calls assuming responsibilities" and addresses Feijóo directly, to whom it reproaches that, twelve months after Mazón's resignation as president of the Generalitat, he "continues protecting him and without publicly demanding that he hand in his seat".
In the association's view, "given the gravity of the damage that his behavior caused, it is not enough to say that it is Mazón's personal decision, since political responsibility also corresponds to those who allow him to continue representing the citizenry under the initials of his party", and it adds that Feijóo "cannot continue giving lessons in management, transparency and political responsibility while avoiding demanding them within his own party".
The Asociación Víctimas Mortales DANA 29-O maintains that it is essential to "make memory and remember other tragedies that left hundreds of victims and families demanding explanations and political responsibilities". "In some, the families had to fight for years to obtain investigations and answers," it points out, to then emphasize that "today we see Feijoo demanding responsibilities from others, responsibilities that his party did not assume after the 2024 dana. Those it continues not to assume".
MORAL AUTHORITY
"With what moral authority?" the entity asks itself, which insists that it does not intend nor wish to "compare the tragedies or the pain of some families with that of others" but rather is "denouncing a way of understanding political responsibility that we consider deeply unfair to the victims, because responsibilities cannot depend on the party that is governing and the pain of the families deserves the same respect, whoever governs".
The association recalls that "the families of the 234 fatalities of the dana have been demanding truth and justice for two years. We do not accept that Mazón's resignation as president serves to turn the page while he continues to keep his seat and his condition as protected by parliamentary immunity. And we do not accept that the Partido Popular intends to consider closed a political responsibility that the families continue demanding".
In this line, it clearly tells Feijóo that responsibility "is not demonstrated with speeches or by demanding resignations from others. It is demonstrated by starting with your own house. Demand that Carlos Mazón hand over his deputy certificate".
"Withdraw your political support from him and stop treating his permanence in the institutions as if nothing had happened. Mazón could resign from the Presidency. We cannot resign from our pain. And while all responsibilities are not clarified, we will continue demanding them," concludes the association, which reiterates that, one year later: "Neither forgetting nor impunity. Truth, justice, memory and prevention".
