The Great Wyoming will leave El intermedio in January 2027 after two decades in charge of the program on La Sexta. José Miguel Monzón, 71 years old, has decided to retire and will hand over the presentation of the satirical show to Gonzo, the current host of Salvados, as this Thursday, November 5, El País has reported.
The change will not be immediate. Wyoming and Gonzo will co-host El intermedio for a period still without a set end date. After that, Gonzo will take over the program on his own, while La Sexta will have to cover his departure from Salvados.
The decision represents one of the biggest changes of hosts in the recent history of the Atresmedia network. Wyoming has been running El intermedio since its debut in 2006, and Gonzo has already been part of the show’s team for nine years.
When does The Great Wyoming retire and when does he leave El intermedio?
The Great Wyoming will begin his farewell from El intermedio in January 2027, although the exact day of his last broadcast has not yet been announced.
Initially, the host will share the studio with Gonzo to make the handover easier. The length of this joint stage is also not defined.
Wyoming had spoken publicly about his intention to retire. In an interview he gave to El País in November 2025, he explained that he wanted to leave television while keeping his health and dedicating more time to his hobbies, including music and reading.
He also addressed his retirement in an interview on Salvados aired in September 2025. At the time, he said that he had been close to leaving television before the pandemic, but that he ultimately changed his mind and continued working.
Now, at 71 years old and after 20 seasons leading El intermedio, he has decided to take the step.
Who is Gonzo, the new host of El intermedio
Fernando González, known as Gonzo, will be the replacement for The Great Wyoming on El intermedio. The journalist, born in Vigo 50 years ago, knows the program well, in which he worked as a reporter between 2010 and 2019.
During that period, he was especially responsible for interviews and reports related to current political affairs. In 2019 he left El intermedio to take over the presentation of Salvados, after Jordi Évole’s departure.
His television career began to gain notoriety on Caiga quien caiga, where he worked between 2005 and 2007. Afterwards, he presented El método Gonzo on Antena 3, a reporting show about social and historical matters.
His return to El intermedio will therefore be a return to the program in which he worked for almost a decade, although this time as the main presenter.
What will happen to Salvados after Gonzo’s departure
Gonzo’s incorporation into El intermedio will require La Sexta to look for a new presenter for Salvados.
According to information advanced by El País, the current season will be the last in which Gonzo hosts the interview and reporting program. The network and Producciones del Barrio are already working on choosing his replacement, although no name has been announced yet.
Salvados will continue to be broadcast, so Gonzo’s departure does not mean the format is cancelled.
The journalist had taken over the program in 2019, when he took over from Jordi Évole. Since then, he has hosted interviews with political, cultural, and social personalities, as well as reports on different current affairs.
El Gran Wyoming bids farewell after 20 years on La Sexta
Wyoming’s departure will put an end to a stage that began in 2006, when El intermedio began its broadcasts on La Sexta.
Since then, the program has combined political information, humor, interviews, and analysis of current affairs. Its host turned the phrase “You already know the news; now we’ll tell you the truth” into one of his trademarks.
Before coming to La Sexta, Wyoming had developed an extensive television career. In the eighties, he presented TVE programs such as Silencio, se juega and ¡Qué noche la de aquel año!, the latter together with Miguel Ríos.
He was also one of the faces of Caiga quien caiga on Telecinco between 1996 and 2002, a program that shared with El intermedio the use of humor to address political information.
His work has received numerous awards, including three Ondas prizes linked to his career on El intermedio. The latest arrived in 2025, when he was recognized as the best communicator.
The audience of El intermedio before Wyoming’s retirement
El intermedio turned 20 years old in April 2026 and continues among La Sexta’s reference news and current affairs shows.
During the 2025-2026 season, the program obtained an average screen share of 6.3%, slightly higher than the network’s average of 6%.
Its highest-audience season was 2014-2015, when it reached a 12.8% share. Since then, television competition in that time slot has intensified with programs such as El hormiguero, La revuelta, and Horizonte.
Salvados also maintains its presence in La Sexta programming. Its Sunday, November 1 edition, dedicated to an interview with Almudena Cid, brought together 624,000 viewers and achieved a 5.4% share.
The handover between Wyoming and Gonzo will begin in January 2027, but two important dates still need to be confirmed: when will Wyoming say goodbye definitively to El intermedio and who will replace Gonzo in Salvados.
