The total solar eclipse of August 12, 2026 will cross Spain from west to east during sunset. The totality will be visible in a large part of the northern half of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, while in the south the phenomenon will be observed only as partial. The totality path will pass through capitals such as A Coruña, León, Bilbao, Zaragoza, València, and Palma.
The Ministry of Health identifies ocular injury from direct observation as the main health risk associated with the eclipse. The warning is especially important because damage can occur without immediate pain, making it easier for a person to continue looking at the Sun without realizing they are injuring their retina.
What time will the eclipse on August 12 be visible?
Times will vary by municipality, although the eclipse will occur during the last hours of the afternoon and very close to sunset.
In A Coruña, it will begin at 19:31, reach its maximum at 20:28, and end at 21:22. The total phase will last approximately 76 seconds. In Palma, the eclipse will start at 19:38 and reach its maximum at 20:32, when the Sun will be very low on the horizon. The National Geographic Institute has a viewer to check the exact times for each locality.
How should the eclipse be viewed safely?
During any phase in which a part of the Sun remains visible, glasses or solar viewers that meet the EN ISO 12312-2 standard and carry the corresponding CE marking must be used.

The glasses must be put on before directing the gaze towards the Sun and must be kept properly adjusted throughout the observation. Health authorities recommend making brief and intermittent observations, taking periodic breaks.
Before using them, it must be checked that the filters do not have:
- Scratches or abrasions.
- Holes.
- Breaks.
- Creases or folds.
- Separations between the filter and the frame.
The mere fact that glasses have the ISO 12312-2 reference printed on them does not guarantee that they have been properly checked. The American Astronomical Society advises purchasing them through manufacturers, specialized distributors, planetariums, scientific museums, or reliable astronomical organizations.
Do normal sunglasses work?
No. Conventional sunglasses do not work for viewing an eclipse, even if they have very dark lenses, are polarized, or have multiple lenses overlapping.
Smoked glasses, photographic negatives, X-rays, compact discs, or other improvised methods do not offer secure protection either. These materials can reduce some of the visible light, but do not guarantee adequate filtering of the radiation that can damage the retina.
Can binoculars, telescopes, or cameras be used?
Only when the device has a specific solar filter installed on the front of the lens, that is, at the end through which light enters.
One should not look through binoculars, a telescope, or the optical viewfinder of a camera using only eclipse glasses. The lenses concentrate solar radiation and can penetrate or deteriorate the filter of the glasses, causing immediate and serious eye injury.
NASA recommends consulting a specialist before using solar filters with optical equipment. The filter must be placed in front of the lens, never between the device and the eye.
When can glasses be removed during a total eclipse?
Only those who are within the path of totality will be able to look directly during the brief period when the Moon completely covers the bright surface of the Sun.
The glasses can only be removed when any luminous fragment of the solar disk has completely disappeared. As soon as the first point of light reappears, they must be put back on immediately.
In places where the eclipse is partial —as will occur in much of southern Spain— there will be no safe moment to look without protection, even if a minimal portion of the Sun remains visible.
How to observe the eclipse without looking directly at the Sun?
Those who do not have certified glasses can resort to indirect projection systems. One of the simplest consists of making a small hole in a piece of cardboard and projecting the image of the Sun onto another surface.
The person must stand with their back to the Sun and only observe the projected image. They should never look at the Sun through the hole. The holes of a colander or the spaces between the leaves of trees can also be used to project small images of the eclipse onto the ground.
What damage can looking at the eclipse without protection cause?
Direct exposure can cause photoretinitis or solar retinopathy, a phototoxic injury that primarily affects the outer layers of the retina.
The most common symptoms include:
- A dark spot or blind spot in the center of vision.
- Loss or decrease of visual acuity.
- Blurred vision.
- Distortion of shapes.
- Alteration in color perception.
- Excessive discomfort in response to light.
The damage may appear painless and, once produced, likely be irreversible. In case of any visual alteration after the eclipse, Health recommends going as soon as possible to a hospital that has an ophthalmology service.
