The third vice president and minister for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Sara Aagesen, defended this Wednesday in New York the role of renewable energies as a key tool to "leave behind the addiction to fossil" fuels and cut energy dependence in the face of the volatility of international markets.
During her speech at an event on Climate Action and Just Transition, Aagesen stated that promoting a "green agenda" allows "to reduce dependence" in an unstable international scenario, conditioned by war conflicts, and "to protect citizens."
"In fact, Spain is better prepared to face the wars we are experiencing, both in Ukraine and in Iran," she pointed out, emphasizing that "neither the sun nor the wind can be blocked by any army." In this sense, the minister highlighted that in recent years Spain has managed to "double" its renewable capacity.
Likewise, she has once again brought to the table the climate emergency and the urgency to act in the face of the extreme episodes it generates, such as intense heat waves, floods, or large fires. "All of this has happened in my country in less than 12 months," she recalled. And she warned: "No one, absolutely no one is prepared for a world that exceeds 1.5 degrees Celsius."
In this context, Aagesen has called for "both climate and energy planning" in the medium and long term, accompanied by "a stable regulatory framework." In her opinion, "this roadmap is not an option, it is the option, because it is the one that makes common sense."
