The French actor and stage director Arnaud Denis has died at the age of 43 after undergoing euthanasia in Namur (Belgium). The performer, also known for his participation in the film 'Yves Saint Laurent', had announced months earlier his decision after his health deteriorated to the point of leaving him in a state of severe disability.
Denis died this Tuesday, September 22. His lawyer, Philippe Courtois, explained to the AFP agency that the decision was made after consulting with three doctors from Namur and related it to the intense pain he had been suffering for months. "His body could no longer support him," the lawyer stated.
The actor himself had made his decision public and this Tuesday posted a final message on his social media. In it, he presented euthanasia as a "liberation" after almost three years of suffering and criticized the medical care received during that period.
A hernia operation marked the beginning of his problems
The origin of Denis's deterioration dates back to July 17, 2023, when he underwent surgery for a right inguinal hernia and was given a polypropylene prosthesis. From then on, he began to suffer various health problems that he directly related to the implant.
The actor described over the following years a picture of pain and other symptoms that ultimately prevented him from leading an autonomous life. Faced with the worsening of his condition, he later traveled to the United States to undergo a procedure aimed at removing the implant.
Denis was diagnosed with myalgic encephalomyelitis, a disease that he linked to what happened after that operation. However, the causal relationship between the prosthesis and the set of his health problems was not legally established, a relevant circumstance in the procedure he initiated in France.
A legal battle that will continue after his death
The performer filed a complaint on January 5, 2026, against an unknown person for involuntary injuries. The Paris Prosecutor's Office ended up archiving it at the end of August, considering the offense insufficiently characterized.
The Public Prosecutor's Office acknowledged that the timeline allowed for a possible relationship between the symptoms and the implant, but pointed out that there was no certain causal link scientifically established that would allow attributing criminal responsibility to the manufacturer of the prosthesis or to the doctors who prescribed and placed it.
The legal battle, however, did not end with that filing. His lawyer filed a new complaint with civil party constitution on September 18 to try to obtain the opening of a judicial investigation and has assured that Denis commissioned him to continue with his actions after his death.
From the stages to creating a collective of affected individuals
Born in Paris in 1983, Denis developed much of his career in theater. He trained with Jean-Laurent Cochet and went through the National Conservatory of Dramatic Art before founding in 2003 the company Les Compagnons de la Chimère, which he directed for fifteen years.
In addition to his career as an actor, he developed an important career as a theater director. Among his works are the staging of 'Marie des Poules', by Gérard Savoisien, and an adaptation of 'Les Liaisons Dangereuses' premiered in 2024. In film, he participated in 'Yves Saint Laurent'.
During his last years, he also turned his case into a public cause. He created the collective French Victims of Hernia Prostheses, which gathered on social networks hundreds of testimonies from people who claimed to have suffered adverse effects after receiving this type of implant.
