Sharing a flat does not exclude by itself from the minimum vital income. A person who rents a room or lives with other tenants can access the benefit if they meet the economic and personal conditions and correctly prove their cohabitation situation.
The decisive question is how that residence is framed in the application. The regulations contemplate both the exclusive use of an area of the dwelling accredited by a legal title and certain cases of cohabitation between non-relatives. These are situations with different requirements. This is stated in articles 8 and 9 of the Minimum Vital Income Law.
A room contract can be relevant
When a legal title proves that a person or a unit of cohabitation exclusively uses a specific area of the dwelling, the law allows considering that area as their residence for the purposes of the benefit.
That is why it matters what the contract proves: who occupies the room, what space is assigned to them, and what the conditions of use are. The documentation must correspond to the real situation.
If the application is processed through the route of people sharing a residence without the family ties provided for in the law, it is required to prove the risk of social exclusion. In this case, social services or authorized entities intervene to certify it.
The absence of kinship should not be confused with an automatic concession. The other requirements of the IMV must also be met.
The 733.60 euros are a reference for the calculation
The guaranteed income for an individual beneficiary amounts in 2026 to 733.60 euros per month. That figure serves to calculate how much corresponds, but does not represent an identical payment for all people.
The benefit covers the difference between the applicable guaranteed income and the computable income, provided that the result reaches at least ten euros per month.
These examples show the operation for a single person, without supplements or adjustments and assuming they meet the other requirements:
- 0 euros 733.60 euros
- 300 euros 433.60 euros
- 500 euros 233.60 euros
- 700 euros 33.60 euros
They are indicative examples. The computable income is determined according to the rules of the benefit and does not necessarily equate to the money deposited in the account during the last month.
What other requirements are reviewed
In addition to income, assets and personal circumstances are examined. The habitual residence is excluded from the asset calculation under the terms provided by the regulations.
There are also conditions of age, legal and effective residence in Spain and, for certain individual applicants, independent living. There are exceptions for specific situations, so it is advisable to check the specific case before dismissing the application.
The IMV is also not calculated based on the price of the room: paying a higher rent does not by itself increase the guaranteed income.
How to prepare the application if you share housing
The first step is to gather the documents that allow identifying the residents and proving how the property is occupied. Among them, registration, the lease agreement, and the certifications required for the case of cohabitation may be necessary.
When accreditation of social exclusion is necessary, it is advisable to start that process before submitting an incomplete file.
The application can be processed through the official portal of the minimum vital income. The Social Security also has the phone number 020 for information about this benefit.
