The deficit of the public administrations, excluding local government, stood at the end of August at 31,183 million, 7% more than in the same period of 2025, which represents 1.75% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), above the 1.72% recorded a year earlier.

According to the data released by the General Intervention of the State (IGAE), at the end of August 2026 a primary deficit of 2,095 million was recorded, equivalent to 0.12% of GDP, which represents a decrease of 21.4% compared with the primary deficit of 2025. The primary balance is calculated by subtracting interest from the deficit figure or, where applicable, surplus.

The IGAE also released this Friday the State deficit figures, in this case with information up to the end of September 2026. In national accounting terms, the State deficit amounts to 39,034 million, 25.8% more than in the same period of 2025.

As a proportion of GDP, the 2026 deficit represents 2.19% of this variable, that is, 0.35 percentage points above the 2025 ratio, which stood at 1.84%.
