The unmanned rocket Spectrum, developed by the German company Isar Aerospace, reached orbit this Saturday after launching from the spaceport of Andøya, in northern Norway. The success represents a significant advance for European aspirations to have its own capability to launch satellites into space from continental territory.
"We are in orbit! And we have just made European history!" celebrated the company on X after confirming the mission's result. The launch also became the first commercial flight from continental Europe to reach space, a relevant step for a European industry that seeks to reduce its dependence on American suppliers and other powers.
Five satellites and a technological experiment
The Spectrum was carrying five small satellites and a technological experiment. The vehicle has been designed by Isar Aerospace to transport small and medium payloads.
The mission had among its main objectives to validate the rocket and complete its first flight with payload. The success comes after a first failed attempt in March 2025, when the Spectrum fell into the sea and exploded shortly after takeoff from the same Norwegian base. No injuries were reported, and the company considered that mission had provided useful information to continue developing the vehicle.
Norway claims its role in the space race
The Norwegian Minister of Industry and Trade, Cecilie Myrseth, highlighted the strategic value of the launch for both her country and Europe. In her opinion, having a facility from which satellites can be launched into orbit strengthens Europe's capacity for independent access to space.
The advance of Isar Aerospace also occurs at a time when several European countries are trying to develop their own launch infrastructures. Sweden, through Esrange, and United Kingdom, with the SaxaVord spaceport in the Shetland Islands, are also seeking to position themselves in this market.
Europe seeks to reduce its dependence
The European space race is taking place in a sector currently dominated by American companies like SpaceX, while Europe has ArianeGroup, the alliance between Airbus and Safran that operates from the spaceport in French Guiana.
In this context, the success of the Spectrum represents an additional alternative for carrying out launches from European soil. The German company recently received about 232 million dollars from the European Space Agency (ESA) to finance the development of new rockets and expand its testing and launch facilities.
Isar Aerospace is also working on the construction of a second launch center in Canada.
A summit to define the European space strategy
The advance comes just days before the Space Summit that France will host in Paris on September 9 and 10. The meeting will bring together political leaders and representatives from the industry to discuss the future of the European space industry in the face of growing competition from the United States and China.
The meeting, co-chaired by Germany, will feature the presence of French President Emmanuel Macron and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. The goal will be to define a common strategy for the next decade and address issues such as radio frequencies and the management of satellite orbits.
Among the projects that will be on the table is IRIS², the future European constellation of satellites for civil and military use. France considers it a strategic project for the technological sovereignty of the continent.
The struggle for satellite constellations
Germany is simultaneously working on its own military constellation. France has avoided questioning this initiative, although it demands that European countries support the community project IRIS².
The push to strengthen European space capabilities comes as the United States and China maintain a dominant position in the sector. The success of the Spectrum now adds a new element to that strategy: the possibility of Europe having its own commercial launches from its continental territory.
