The Conseller of Housing, Territory and Mobility, José Luis Mateo, has reiterated that the Govern is working so that the anti-squatting office "will be a reality as soon as possible".

The regional official spoke thus this Tuesday during the control session to the Govern in the plenary session of the Parlament, following a question posed by the Vox deputy Patricia de las Heras.

Mateo explained that this new service will provide support, advice, and accompaniment to people who suffer illegal occupations of their homes, with the aim of "preventing, combating and reducing this phenomenon".

According to what he detailed, the Conselleria has already defined the structure of the office and has launched the administrative procedures to staff it. In this regard, the Consell de Govern has approved the modification of the list of positions to incorporate four new posts.

The Vox deputy recalled that "the anti-squatting office, agreed with Vox, already has coverage and budget. It only needs to raise the shutters and lawyers, because every day without an office the owner waits and the delinquent rubs his hands together".

At another moment in his intervention, Mateo defended his management in housing policy, underscoring that the shock plan launched at the beginning of the legislature "is producing results", although he admitted that these do not occur "from one day to the next".

In the face of this view, the PSIB deputy Mercedes Garrido accused the Executive of being "collecting the results of its non-management" and expressed her doubts that the new housing plan announced by the president of the Govern, Marga Prohens, during the Debate on General Policy, can effectively improve the current housing crisis.

The Socialist questioned the effectiveness of the new strategy by asking: "How do they think a new plan will solve the problem if the previous one has been a failure?", and summarized "the balance of the Govern's management" by pointing out that rent has gone from 800 to 1,500 euros per month.

ITS resources for public housing

In matters of financing, the conseller has highlighted that the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) will be "one more tool" to promote the construction of public housing on the islands.

Mateo backed the initiative, also announced by president Marga Prohens in the Debate on General Policy, although he did not specify at what moment the necessary legislative amendment will be brought to the Parlament.

In response to a question from the socialist deputy Marc Pons, the conseller has insisted that the Govern's "commitment" to the promotion of public housing is not conditional on the funds coming from the ITS, and has recalled that the Ibavi is currently processing more than 2,000 homes.

Pons has called for a clear timetable on when the regulatory change will be approved in order to be able to allocate part of the revenue from this tax to housing and has censured the Executive for not having yet awarded developments that have already been completed.

Regarding the 11 homes in Fornells pending award, Mateo has stated that "they have not been delivered for various reasons, it has not been possible to do so yet".
