The British Police have reported the arrest this Saturday of a 28-year-old man, currently in custody, as the main suspect in the murder of veteran and prominent conservative politician Ann Widdecombe, whose body was found last Thursday in her home in Newton Abbot, in the southwest of England.
"We can confirm that a 28-year-old man was arrested tonight (July 11) at an address in the South Yorkshire area on suspicion of the murder of Ann Widdecombe. The suspect, a white British national, is now in custody," Devon and Cornwall Police reported in a statement released on social media.
In that same note, the authorities detail that the arrest operation was carried out by the Northeast Counter-Terrorism Police and South Yorkshire Police, who are working jointly with Devon and Cornwall officers in the ongoing investigations.
"So far, there is no information to indicate that this is an incident related to terrorism and, as a police force, we maintain the primacy of the investigation," the officers added, before notifying that "this is an ongoing investigation, so no further information will be provided (during the) night."
This new arrest comes after, the previous day, the same police force announced the release without charges of the then sole suspect in the case: a 26-year-old white British man who "is no longer part of the investigation," as explained by Deputy Chief Constable Matt Longman in statements reported by the British press.
Ann Widdecombe, 78, presented "serious injuries" when her body was found lifeless around midday on Thursday, according to the official version of the Police, which has reiterated that terrorism is ruled out as a possible motive for the crime.
