The Secretary General of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Diosdado Cabello, has described the participation of the acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, in the high-level debate of the United Nations General Assembly, held in New York, as a milestone for the country's diplomacy.
Cabello has supported Rodríguez's presence at the meeting and has rebutted the criticisms that arose from the invitation extended to the Venezuelan leader, emphasizing that Venezuela will once again have representation in the UN plenary through its current head of state.
"There are people who are hurt because they invited the president of Venezuela. Who are they going to invite?" Cabello has exclaimed at a press conference, attributing the objections to sectors that, according to him, maintain a confrontational stance towards the country. In this regard, he has lashed out at those who do not recognize the legitimacy of this presence, assuring that they suffer from a problem he has labeled as "psychiatric" and linked to "bitterness."
For the Chavista leader, Rodríguez's intervention represents, above all, a test of the results of the foreign policy promoted from Caracas. "The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela will be present at the United Nations General Assembly," he has reiterated, framing this fact as "the triumph of Venezuelan peace diplomacy."
Cabello has added that this appearance carries even more weight due to the political context the country is going through. "Despite everything, we will be present there," he has stated, referring to the wishes of actors who, in his words, "hate this country" and against whom the Venezuelan Executive claims to stand firm.
MORE THAN 50 SCHEDULED MEETINGS
The PSUV representative has also highlighted the interest that, as he has indicated, representatives from other states show in holding meetings with the Venezuelan president, and has maintained that Rodríguez had a schedule of more than fifty meetings with heads of state before departing for the United States.
"We will be accompanying our president's speech, she had more than 50 meetings before leaving, with heads of state who wanted to meet with her. Imagine the importance of being there, people from different countries who want to talk," he has pointed out.
Cabello has linked this intense foreign agenda with the process of normalizing Venezuela's ties with various governments and has specifically mentioned the cases of Paraguay, Chile, and the United Kingdom.
The displacement of Rodríguez to the United States has occurred in the early morning to intervene in the General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly. It is expected that the leader will present her speech this Thursday before the plenary of the international organization.
The visit takes place, moreover, at a time of rapprochement between Caracas and Washington. According to the information disseminated by the U.S. government and reported by the Venezuelan press, President Donald Trump would be considering holding a brief informal meeting with Rodríguez this Tuesday, on the sidelines of the official agenda of the General Assembly.
