The political leader and former presidential candidate of Ecuador Luisa González was arrested this Thursday by Ecuadorian security forces, according to the public complaint made by former president Rafael Correa. At the same time, the Attorney General's Office confirmed that several arrests have been made in an open case for alleged irregularities in political financing and electoral spending during the 2023 presidential campaign.

"They arrested Luisa González. Enough already! Ecuador will prevail," the former president indicated in a message shared on social media, without providing any additional information for now about the legal situation of the former candidate or the specific circumstances of her arrest.

In a statement, the Attorney General's Office of Ecuador reported that police agents executed arrest warrants in the provinces of Pichincha and Manabí "against three people investigated for their alleged participation in the crime of money laundering." However, the agency has not revealed the identity of those arrested nor specified if González is among them.

The institution has detailed that the case focuses on "alleged irregularities in political financing and electoral spending on advertising during the 2023 presidential campaign due to inconsistencies in the contributions and the lawful origin of the resources," for which it continues to gather information and carry out proceedings to clarify the possible network of illicit funds linked to electoral activity.
